Why paving is weather work with a deadline

Hot mix asphalt has to be compacted while it is still hot. Rolling is what locks the stone together and squeezes the air out, and once the mat cools past roughly 175 degrees it stops responding to the roller. Everything that happens on a paving day is arranged around that window: how far the trucks travel, how much is laid at once, how quickly the roller follows the paver. A thin layer on a cold day loses that window in minutes, which is why late-season work gets scheduled tightly and why a mild October afternoon is not the same thing as a warm one.

Undercompacted asphalt looks finished. It is the failure you cannot see on the day. Air left in the mat lets water in, and water in a New Hampshire pavement means the freeze cycle starts breaking it apart from the inside. A driveway that ravels into loose stone after two winters was usually laid correctly and rolled badly, or laid too cold.

Thickness is the other half. Asphalt is placed loose and compacts down by roughly a quarter of its depth, so a finished surface of a given thickness starts noticeably deeper on the paver. Where a surface has to carry more than cars, it is built in two layers, a coarser binder course underneath and a finer wearing course on top, with a tack coat between them so the two bond into one slab rather than sliding as two.
