Got a Problem with Potholes?
If your driveway or parking lot is riddled with potholes, it might be time to give us a call. Not only are potholes uncomfortable to bounce over in your car or truck, they can cause serious and costly distress to any vehicle, including flat tires, suspension issues, bent rims, and physical damage to the vehicle’s body.
Potholes are consistently a big expense for municipalities, especially here in New England where harsh winters cause our roads to freeze and thaw, with consistent traffic breaking the surface, resulting in problematic potholes.
A pothole is usually a base problem showing through the surface. Water gets into a crack, freezes, lifts the asphalt, and traffic breaks the lifted piece out. Patching the hole buys a season. Fixing what is underneath it is what stops it coming back, and then the surface goes back down on a base that drains.
Catch Basin Not… Catching?
Another challenge facing our residential and commercial customers comes from compromised catch basins.
A catch basin is intended to “catch” runoff water, following extensive rainfall. If the catch basin gets clogged with debris or suffers stress of some kind, causing the water to pool or back up, you could wind up with a flood near your home or business. Not ideal and just another reason why you call us.
Catch basins are site work rather than surface work. Clearing one out is a morning. Resetting one that has settled, or putting one in where the water currently has nowhere to go, means digging and re-grading before anything gets paved over it.

Water Swirling Around, but Not Down Your Storm Drain?
And we’ll give you one more: storm drains. Similar to a catch basin, a storm drain is designed for the same purpose but located along roadways and city streets.
If a storm drain somehow clogs -- either because it's too small for the job or debris has built up over time, it will fail to function properly, resulting in a backup of water and potential property flooding.

What goes wrong between the digging and the paving
When the excavation and the paving are two different companies, the paving crew inherits whatever base it is handed. If the grade was set to the wrong fall, if the stone was compacted in one thick layer instead of several thin ones, if a catch basin sits an inch too high, none of it is visible on paving day. It becomes visible two winters later, as a crack along the line the ground moved, or a puddle that freezes in the same spot every year.
A paved surface needs about a quarter of an inch of fall per foot to shed water reliably, and that number is set by the person running the excavator, not the person running the paver. When it is one company, the person who set the grade is the one answerable for how it drains in year three.
Common questions
Do you do the excavation and the paving, or is one of them subcontracted?
Both, with our own crews and our own equipment. The site work and the surface come from one company working to one standard.
Can excavation and paving be done as one project?
Yes, and it is usually faster than booking two contractors, because the site is mobilized once and the grade is set by the people who have to pave on it.
Which New Hampshire towns do you cover?
Six counties: Merrimack, Hillsborough, Rockingham, Strafford, Cheshire and Belknap. The yard is in Penacook, inside Concord.
Do you quote commercial work as well as residential?
Yes. Parking lots, private roads and site work for businesses, property managers and associations, alongside driveways for homes.
